Jon Bernhardt was inspired to buy his first theremin in 1996 after a screening of the documentary film, “Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey”. Shortly thereafter, he co-founded The Lothars, an experimental semi-improvisational band that has featured as many as four thereminists playing at once. Their CDs have received airplay on radio stations across the United States and they have performed in such far flung cities as New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, London and of course their native Boston.
In addition to the Lothars, Jon has recorded and performed with several pop groups including The Pee Wee Fist, Betwixt, UV Protection and One Happy Island. As a solo artist, he has performed frequently at public events with a repertoire that focuses on New Wave / Alternative Rock songs by artists such as The Ramones, The Clash, The Pixies and The Buggles. As Jon puts it, “I like to confound my audience with songs that would normally be considered completely inappropriate for the theremin.” His efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2007, on the strength of his YouTube performance of “Video Killed the Radio Star”, he was flown to Los Angeles to star in a television commercial for the White Castle hamburger chain.
Jon lives in Somerville, Massachusetts with his wife Christina. They are expecting their first child in October.
